Course: EDLD 5317 – Resources for Digital Environments

By Ayla Rightenour

When I started this course, I wasn’t quite sure how all the pieces would fit together (media production, digital tools, publication, and reflection). But week by week, things started to connect. This wasn’t just about learning how to use new tools, it was about building a stronger voice as an educator and learning how to share it. From writing a publication to producing a podcast, each assignment pushed me to think differently about how I teach and how I lead. And honestly? I’ve grown more in the last eight weeks than I expected.

Evaluation of Success

One of the biggest wins for me was discovering how naturally my innovation plan, School Sphere, could evolve through storytelling. Being able to shape it into a podcast, a publication, and a visual presentation really solidified my purpose. I also gained confidence sharing my ideas with a real audience, and not just submitting things for a grade. The fact that this course encouraged me to post to my ePortfolio and think about actual publication was a big mindset shift.

Areas of Growth

I’d say time management and resisting perfectionism were challenges. I caught myself over-editing more than once instead of trusting my voice. I also realized I have a habit of hesitating when something feels too “official” (like submitting to a journal). But I’m learning that sharing imperfect work is still valuable, especially when it's authentic.

Assignment Highlights & Reflections

Publication Outline
This was the starting point where my thoughts began to take shape. Outlining “More Than a Click” helped me see that my idea had weight, and that it could actually benefit others.

Publication Rough Draft
Drafting the article was hard at first. I had so much to say, but I didn’t want to sound robotic or overly polished, and I do tend to ramble on in my writings. Once I relaxed into my own voice, it flowed naturally. The peer feedback helped shape the structure and reminded me that clarity matters more than fluff.

Media Project
I had a blast with this one. I wrote a podcast script and used Ai to generate a logo image. It was cool seeing how my publication could come alive in audio and visuals. The podcast ended up being short but solid and I’m already thinking of doing a third episode.

Final Publication Draft
This version captured everything I’ve been working on this semester. I tied in Schank, Papert, and Roblyer & Hughes to support my ideas, but more importantly, I kept it grounded in my own experiences.

Discussion Group Reflection

I loved being in a group of like-minded educators. Reading everyone’s ideas helped me look at my own with fresh eyes. I especially appreciated the honest feedback on my draft, specific suggestions about formatting and tightening up structure really helped. I also tried to give back with thoughtful comments and encouragement. The balance of support and challenge was exactly what I needed.

 Summary & Takeaways

This course didn’t just give me tools, it gave me a platform. I walked in focused on my innovation plan, and I’m walking out with a full publication draft, a podcast, and a solid understanding of how to amplify my voice online. I now see my ePortfolio not just as a requirement, but as a real representation of who I am as a digital learning leader.
5317 reminded me that digital tools should serve a purpose, not just fill a screen. When we put learning first, the tools fall into place. And when we share what we’ve learned, we build something bigger than just a lesson plan. We build connections.
